Archetypical forms such as the jota, the fandango or the bolero are identified, and it is questioned whether there are common formal aspects among different genres, such as religious songs, children’s songs, dances, romances, among others, that is, whether these genres share not only the subject matter, but also certain significant melodic turns of phrase.
The general objective is to determine whether there are characteristic melodic and structural patterns in the genres of popular music of Spanish oral tradition. The specific objectives include reviewing previous classifications, preparing pieces in MusicXML format, extracting melodic patterns, and identifying similarities and differences between genres.
The methodology includes an exhaustive bibliographic review, selection and editing of representative pieces, extraction of patterns using MIDI analysis algorithms, comparative analysis, and elaboration of conclusions. The project is divided into phases with responsibilities shared between musicologists, ethnomusicologists and engineers.
